Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of jaw, bite, and tooth alignment issues. Doctors of orthodontics are called orthodontists. Orthodontists treat patients of all ages, but the most common patients are children and adolescents.

The primary objective of orthodontic treatment is to correct any alignment issues. This goal can be achieved through various types of orthodontics treatments. Your dentist will determine your oral health and recommend the best treatment option.

Traditional Braces

Traditional braces use metal brackets and wires to straighten teeth. Orthodontic treatment can take at least a year on average, but the results last a lifetime.

Traditional braces are the least expensive type of orthodontic treatment.

Clear Braces

Clear braces are a popular orthodontic treatment that utilizes clear, plastic aligners to gradually shift the teeth into the desired position. Each aligner is worn for two weeks before progressing to the next aligner in the series. This treatment modality is highly effective in treating minor to moderate misalignments.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are a type of orthodontic appliance that straightens teeth from the inside of the mouth. These braces are hidden behind the teeth and are therefore sometimes referred to as “behind the teeth” braces. However, lingual braces are attached to the backside of the teeth rather than the front.

Traditional braces that are placed on the outside of the teeth have brackets and wires that are visible, while lingual braces are custom-made to fit the backside of the teeth.

Invisalign

Invisalign, or invisible braces, straightens teeth using clear, removable aligners that are worn over the teeth. This orthodontic treatment is often preferred because it doesn’t contain any uncomfortable wires or brackets and can be removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing. Invisalign treatment works the same way traditional braces do, applying the right amount of pressure to slowly move teeth into the desired position.

Self-Ligating Braces (Damon Braces)

Damon braces were invented by Dr. Dwight Damon. These braces were designed for patients who required minor orthodontic treatment. The treatment time for Damon braces is usually shorter than with traditional braces.
