Your missing teeth can cause a toll on your day-to-day living. From affecting tooth functionality to impacting your aesthetic appearance, missing teeth can be a real concern. Earlier, only dentures were used to restore this problem. But with the advancement in technology, new approaches have been introduced, and dental implants are one of them.
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made using titanium that we place into your jawbone so that they fuse well and provide a foundation to your artificial teeth (crowns). Implants are a lifelong treatment for missing teeth. Primarily a restorative treatment, they are also considered a cosmetic dental procedure many people choose to enhance their smile.
Before beginning the procedure, we will assess your oral health and also carry out a dental examination to check whether you qualify for implants or not. It is essential to have enough jawbone to support the implant. If you do not have enough jawbone, we will first perform a bone grafting surgery. It includes taking some portion of bone tissues from other parts of your body or using synthetic material and fusing them to your existing jawbone.
During your first appointment, we will make a surgical incision into your jaw to place the titanium stud. We will stitch the incision so that the dental implant integrates well with your jawbone. The process may take a few weeks to heal, which is called osseointegration.
Once the incision is properly healed, we will make another incision to expose the implant and prepare your gum tissue to heal around the area. We will place a temporary cap on the implant to encourage healing. We will also take impressions of your teeth to create dental crowns.
On the final appointment, we will remove the temporary cap and place the permanent crown.
